Weight Loss Miracles?

Every time that I hear of a new fat loss "miracle" on television from a person pushing fad foods and supplements, I think to myself if everything is a miracle then nothing is a miracle. If everyone is special then no one is special. The term miracle has lost all meaning when it is used so often. Look at some of the definitions of miracle below. Do any of these apply to something that may help you burn an extra few calories a day? I don't think so.

   1. an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs

   2. an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment

   3. a wonder; marvel.

  4. a wonderful or surpassing example of some quality:

The latest miracles include things like medium-chain triglycerides or MCT's which is found in coconut oil. It was suggested that you can burn an extra 100 calories a day by taking MCT oil. Most MCT oil supplements have 100 calories per tablespoon and suggest that you consume 2 tablespoons a day, so you are consuming 200 calories in order to help your body burn 100? That doesn't seem that smart since that still gives you a surplus of 100 from the "miracle" oil. Also, liquid calories aren't that filling. If you are replacing 200 calories of solid food for 200 calories of oil, you will probably be hungrier throughout the day which will encourage you to eat more.

An easier way to "burn" an extra 100 calories a day and save money while doing so is to simply not eat them in the first place. Instead of eating 2 tablespoons of peanut butter eat 1 tablespoon. Voila! That's 100 calories a day, 3,000 calories a month, or 36,000 calories a year. If there are 3,500 calories in a pound of fat then you can lose over 10 pounds a year by eating one less tablespoon of peanut butter a day! Of course, it's not that easy and it doesn't work that way.

This approach isn't as popular as the "miracles" that you may see on television or in magazines because it can't be sold. There is a lot of money in supplements and not much money in eating less. Companies such as JIF and Skippy will lose money if you follow the "eat a tablespoon less of peanut butter a day" solution. Of course eating a tablespoon less of peanut butter a day is synonymous with eating less of anything. There isn't a miracle product that will melt away your fat. The more logical solution is to do simple things like eating a little less peanut butter for example.
